Surface Preparation: A Step You Can’t Skip!

In renovation projects, surface preparation is a critical step to ensure the quality and durability of the final work. To achieve optimal results, using concrete additives, surface preparation products, and repair solutions is essential.

Wondering how to determine if a surface (wall or floor) is ready for decorative concrete application? Follow these two essential steps:

  • Ensure the surface is sound and clean.
  • If not, apply a bonding primer or use a self-leveling compound to create a smooth and level surface.

Inspect the surface thoroughly. Proper adhesion of your decorative concrete depends on the quality of the prepared substrate. Conduct a thorough check to identify any potential issues before applying the new coating. Diagnosing Your Surface: 4 Key Factors

  • Surface Hardness : The substrate must be strong enough to avoid cracks or delamination. Test hardness by scratching the surface with a screwdriver—scratches should remain superficial. If the substrate is too soft, remove it or apply a leveling screed to restore a clean, smooth base.
  • Surface Porosity : Check the porosity of the surface to determine adhesion quality. Perform the water drop test:
If water absorbs in 1–5 minutes, the surface is porous.
If it takes longer, the surface is sealed.
Use Harmony Prim for porous surfaces and Harmony Prim Plus for sealed surfaces.
  • Surface Stability : Your substrate must be stable and securely anchored to prevent deformation, instability, or cracks in the decorative finish.
  • Surface Cleanliness : The substrate must be clean, free of grease, dust, or debris. Repair cracks beforehand and remove traces of plaster, glue, varnish, or wax. Plaster or glue can be removed with a spatula, while varnishes, waxes, and paints should be sanded and thoroughly dusted.

Preparation, Surface Repairs & Concrete Additives

Before starting any renovation work, inspect the condition of the substrate, whether it’s a wall or a floor. Ensure there are no holes or uneven spots that could interfere with the application of the coating. The surface must be sound, dry, free of humidity or mold, and thoroughly cleaned and dusted.

If cracks are present, treat them before applying the coating. For best results, we recommend using the special crack repair kit.

Concrete additives enhance mechanical resistance, often through the inclusion of fibers. Some additives improve the plasticity of concrete, making it more flexible and easier to work with, while others provide waterproofing properties.

Achieving the perfect finish starts with proper preparation—lay the groundwork for success!
